John Ondrasik是这个名字背后的灵魂人物，他不仅演唱作曲，还弹得一手好吉他和钢琴。出生在洛杉矶圣费南多谷的Ondrasik有位做钢琴教师的母亲，从两岁时就开始让他接受音乐训练。13岁那年，Ondrasik对姐姐的吉他产生兴趣，自学弹奏并试着谱曲。他还在歌剧院学习声乐，不过他很快发现自己真正喜欢的不是歌剧，而是像Billy Joel，Stevie Wonder，Elton John那样的音乐。
1997年，他用“Five for Fighting（曲棍球比赛的一项判罚规则）”作为艺名，在Capitol唱片旗下推出了首张专辑《Message for Albert》。三年后，他的第二张专辑《American Town》在哥伦比亚唱片旗下发行。这张极具人文主义风采的唱作专辑，诞生了在“911”事件中抚慰整个美国的歌曲《Superman (It's Not Easy)》。Ondrasik在2001年冬天“911”纪念演唱会上高唱这支曲子，使得这张唱片的销量也在其后一路狂升，成为一张白金唱片。
